Welcome Aboad
Aloha, and welcome to the ESL Hawai'i weblog, or "blog". I am your original blogger here, the blog "curator", and I will be posting from time to time about the students or classes I am teaching, the "state of the field" as it pertains to ESL in general, or to Hawaii in particular, or even andthing happening general education here in Hawai'i.
I am a full-time instructor at a major university/college here who happened also to graduate from the SLS Department at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.
I have created this blog to fill a need not only for myself, but for the ESL community as a whole. Don't get me wrong: I am not the type of person who likes to read his own prose. However, there are few places where teachers or instructors can gather and "talk shop". I'm thinking about sharing ideas, or collaborating on projects or research ideas. There may be informal networks that have built up within individual institutions, for example--but there are little or no connections of teachers between schools. That is where I hope this blog comes in handy. If ESL Hawai'i can help to increase networking between teachers who might not otherwise have had a chance to work or collaborate together, then I will be happy, and the purpose of this blog will have been served.
As time goes on, as the need arises, I intend to lay some ground rules, but for now, feel free to comment, post, etc. as you see fit. You may sign up anonymously; I only ask that civil tones be kept in discussion areas. And if you do decide to tell us about a student--for whatever reason--be sure you do not use the student's real name. Being young it tough enough as it is without your teacher whoopin' and hollerin' about you in public forum.
Other than that? Take care.
